Tilgate turns up in 13th and 14th century tax records, and by the 17th century Tilgate Furnace was operating within Tilgate Forest as part of the Weald's iron industry. Tilgate Mansion and its 2,185-acre estate were created in the 1860s; the old furnace's supply ponds survived to become Tilgate Lake. The mansion was sold in 1939, used by the Canadian Army during the Second World War and later demolished — the estate became Tilgate Park, one of the most recognisable open spaces in Crawley today. Tilgate sits in the south of Crawley, bordering the park.
