Three Bridges
Three Bridges started as a tiny hamlet and grew rapidly once the London and Brighton Railway arrived in 1841. The name has nothing to do with railway bridges — it comes from three older crossings over streams that predate the railway by centuries. The hamlet became a proper railway junction in 1848, with further branch lines to Horsham, Portsmouth and East Grinstead following soon after. Crawley New Town development in the late 1940s changed the area completely, and today Three Bridges is one of the borough's best-connected neighbourhoods, home to one of Crawley's main railway stations and close to Gatwick Airport.
